RE: 2007-2008 Texas History Essay Contests for 4th and 7th Grade Students and History Teachers

In support of the education of Texas history in our Texas schools, public and private, to maintain

accuracy and interest with our leaders of tomorrow, the Alamo MIssion Chapter of the Daughters

of the Republic of Texas cordially invite your District to participate in the 2007-08 Texas History Essay

Contests for 4th and 7th grade students. These contests offer unique opportunities for students to

fulfill TAKS objectives and to extend classroom activities for a real world purpose. These contests are

open to ALL 4th and 7th grade students studying Texas history including those participating in

Gifted and Talented programs.

Teachers are asked to rank their top 5 student essays and submit them as per the enclosed

rules no later than January 31, 2008. All participating students will receive Certificates of Achievement

at an awards ceremony on the grounds of our historic Alamo. In addition, City winners will

receive a cash prize and the opportunity to compete at the state level. State winners receive additional

recognition and cash prizes.

History teachers of 4th and 7th grade students are invited to participate in an essay contest as

well. City winners will receive an invitation to the DRT Convention in Tyler in May 2008. State winners

receive recognition and cash prizes of $700 each. The winning teachers’ schools will each receive a

cash prize of $1000.

Teachers and/or students who wish to participate are aksed to return an enclosed post card. A

DRT Committee member will then make a personal contact directly with the participating teacher.
